Finest Keemun Mao Feng Black Tea

    Size: 30g Caddy

Finest Keemun Mao Feng is an artisanal black tea handmade in small quantities. 'Keemun' refers to Qimen county in China's Anhui Province, while 'Mao Feng' describes the fine strips the tea has been crafted into, which requires a great deal of skill. Qimen produced only green tea until the 1880s, when a young official lost his job and was disgraced. His father had advised him that it was a better guarantee of success to have a skill to make a living than to hold a position of authority. He traveled to Fujian to learn how to make black tea and on his return set up three factories to manufacture black tea from the same leaves his competitors were making green tea from.

      The Good Stuff

Like most tea drinkers, I was introduced to Keemun as a 'breakfast tea' in the Western taste. Having since abandoned Western-style brewing in favour of 'gongfu' (so-called), it occurred to me to return to Keemun in order to taste it properly and get a real sense of what it has to offer. Well, let me just tell you: this is the good stuff. This is not 'three minutes in a Brown Betty and a spot of milk' or 'BOPF breakfast blend base'. This is a product of great skill and craft. In other words, it's a proper tea, and a perfect representation of what Keemun can be. It is expansive and rich, tastes of caramel, honey and berries and lingers on the palette indefinitely. It is not bitter, earthy, smoky or sour. It does NOT need milk or sugar. And as with any proper tea, it's the naturally-occurring flavours and qualities one seeks; needless to say, this has plenty of them. In fact, it just might be the best black tea I've tasted on my journey so far.

This tea passed all the tests: scent in container is fresh and alluring; first pouring into cup wafts heavenly steam (and only gets better!); taste is satisfying and most pleasurable--everything a tea should be.
